An Australian woman has shared a “disgusting” find in a steak she ordered from a restaurant, with footage showing live maggots squirming inside the meat.
The woman had gone out for a meal in November. 10 with her husband and son.
They chose to dine at Lone Star Rib House Penrith, where depending on the type ordered, a steak can cost up to $42.
But when her meal arrived on the table, she could almost immediately see that something wasn’t “wrong.”
“I kind of zoomed in, looking at the piece of steak, and I thought, ‘It’s really weird, there’s stuff moving,'” she told ABC.
At first, her husband thought it might be spice, but upon closer inspection, he realized he was looking at maggots, the woman claimed.
When she brought up the issue with a staff member, they pointed out the restaurant’s optimal food and health safety rating, she said.
Her plate was returned to the kitchen, but staff said they didn’t know how the firecrackers got into the steak, she claimed.
She said she was also told the maggots came from the salad and not the steak.
“[The maggots] they were having the time of their lives on that piece of steak, and there wasn’t a single worm in the salad,” she said.
“But anyway, there shouldn’t have been any worms on the plate at all.”
“The way I see it, there are at least two, maybe three people in that restaurant handling the steak… how did one of those people not notice that the steak was moving?
The Blue Mountains woman, who did not want to be identified, also refused a replacement meal as she was “slow” and wanted to leave.
Lone Star Rib House would not comment on the video or “personal views on the venue’s hygiene standards”, but said an independent environmental health officer had carried out an inspection the following day following a complaint.
“After a thorough assessment, the inspection revealed no areas of concern,” they said.
The inspection found no flies on the premises and noted that the meat was stored in sealed bags.
The “food safety incident” was being investigated by Penrith City Council, a spokesman said, while the NSW Food Authority was also being consulted.
“The Council’s inspection is covering all aspects – from the food received from the supplier, the storage of the food in the business and the preparation of the food,” they said.
“The council had previously completed a routine and unannounced inspection at the business on November 5, which did not identify any concerns.”
But the woman said she was still waiting for an apology after the experience has made her paranoid about cooking beef and turned off steak.
“We were out for a family meal, we were hungry, something really disgusting and inappropriate happened and nobody owned up to it,” she added.
